I have tried my hand at different art media, but fabric is my passion. There is a visual and tactile element of quilted fabric that brings softness to hard wall surfaces. And color! The vibrancy of batiks and hand-dyed fabrics just makes my heart sing. Fabric prints provide visual texture and threads further define, shade, and highlight the design. All combine to become my palette and paints.
Most of my work is by commission. Each piece is client specific and one-of-a-kind. So many things inspire me for a project. It might start with a piece of fabric, or one of my own or a client's photographs, or a classic painting by one of the old masters. I might use a photo as is for realism, or manipulate the photograph by cropping, enlarging, and stretching for a more abstract work. No matter the design approach, my method of assembly is by machine in the forms of piecing, raw-edge appliqué, thread "painting" and free-motion quilting. Fabrics and threads are cotton and rayon. Depending on the size and detail of a piece, it can entail up to 50 different fabrics and a hundred different thread colors. Last year I did start my own series of art quilts and you can see a few of my current works for sale on the gallery pages. As in commissioned designs, each art quilt is unique and not repeated.
This year I will be offering wall-hanging patterns for a series "Angels Watching Over Us". The first three patterns are now available. And, I am adding two workshops for several small wall-hanging quilts for my fish and floral designs.
